Workers’ Music Association 90 Years going strong!

On a fateful day in March 1936, progressive musicians gathered together with the purpose to promote working class music, and make music more accessible to working class people

90 Years later, the WMA is going strong and have multiple events to celebrate our 90th Anniversary!

Firstly, our Summer School returns to Ingestre Hall, where we have two new tutors – Aidan Chan and Suzanne Hootsmans – as well as special guest appearance from the world renowned Clarinettist Heather Roche.

Heather herself says: “As a student, summer schools have always been my favourite: a whole week of making music, getting better at my instrument and meeting other wonderful musicians. I’m so thrilled to be involved now as a teacher and can’t wait to help you get to the next level in your chamber music and composition skills!”

You can find out more on our website: https://workersmusic.co.uk/summer-school/

We are also, fundraising to bring the one and only Tayo Aluko to Summer School, to perform his critically acclaimed ‘Call Mr Robeson’. With your support, we can put on this remarkable show.

Tayo says: “The Summer School has been on my radar literally for two decades, but for one reason or another, I have never been able to attend. It is an incredible joy and privilege that my first involvement with it will be sharing Paul Robeson’s story there. I am sure that the play and the other music-making there will give us all much-needed inspiration and uplift in these awful times.”

Alongside this, we see the return of our Spring Weekend, where our wonderful Phil Hargreaves and Maggie Nicols host a weekend of music making in South Wales!

And in March, we work with our friends in the GFTU to lead a special day’s class on radical songs, led by our Secretary Ben Lunn and the enigmatic Phil Hargreaves!

Over the coming days we’ll share more about our exciting events, but we hope we’ll get to see you as we celebrate 90 years going strong!
